Big news! Sherman Hospital is excited to announce that it has been granted a three-year/full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. Only eighteen hospitals in Illinois have achieved this accreditation.

Receiving care at a NAPBC-accredited center ensures that a patient will have access to:

• Comprehensive care, including a full range of state-of-the-art services
• A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
• Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options
• And, most importantly, quality breast care close to home.

“This accreditation is a testament to the outstanding care we provide to our breast patients,” says Mary Gleason, Director, Center for Cancer Care at Sherman Health. “From prevention and detection, to diagnosis, treatment and survivorship care, we are proud to partner with our patients throughout their journey to provide the best possible care and support.”

During the survey process, Sherman had to demonstrate compliance with standards established by the NAPBC for treating women who are diagnosed with the full spectrum of breast disease. The standards include proficiency in the areas of: center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement. A breast center that achieves NAPBC accreditation has demonstrated a firm commitment to offer its patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease.

ification Corporation. Only 583 nurses in the nation have attained this specialty certification.

“We are extremely proud of Michele for achieving this certification, which highlights her dedication to providing outstanding healthcare and service to our patients,” says Judy Balcitis, chief nursing officer, Sherman Health. “Advanced certifications exemplify the talent, specialized knowledge and experience of our nursing team at Sherman Health.”

Michele received an Associate’s Degree in Science and Nursing, with honors, from Elgin Community College prior to obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, with honors, from Northern Illinois University. She has worked at Sherman Hospital for 30 years. Prior to her role as a nurse navigator, Michele worked as a telemetry nurse, phlebotomist and also worked in pharmacy. She is a member of the Breast Program Leadership Committee at Sherman, currently working towards obtaining national accreditation for Sherman’s Breast Center.

“It has always been my goal to continue to learn and obtain advanced certifications to grow as a professional,” says Michele. “The CBCN examination tests the knowledge necessary to provide evidence-based care to our breast care patients, including prevention and detection, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and end of life care. I knew the many hours invested in preparing for this examination would ensure that my patients receive the best possible care.”

CBCN is the only accredited certification program that is available exclusively to registered nurses, and that encompasses the entire spectrum of breast care nursing practice. This certification is a validation of an individual’s knowledge of breast care.

The Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation is a non-profit organization that develops, administers, and evaluates programs for certification in oncology nursing. The organization was incorporated in 1984 and is governed by a Board of Directors, with members who represent various levels of certification in oncology nursing and the public at large.

Mary Gleason, Director of the Center for Cancer Care at Sherman Hospital, was kind enough to take time out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions we had about the new Center for Cancer Care. If you have a question of your own you’d like answered, just fill out the comment section at the bottom of the post.

Question: What is your role at Sherman Hospital? Educational and personal background?

Answer: I’m Director of the Center for Cancer Care at Sherman Hospital, which encompasses medical and radiation oncology, research and cancer data registry, and partner with our physicians, staff and patients to ensure excellent patient care.

On the education side, I have a baccalaureate in Science and am OCN-certified, and I’m currently working on a Masters in Health Administration through the University of Phoenix.

My husband is 2 years post bone marrow transplant and doing well. I have 3 awesome children, 2 boys in college and 1 daughter that is a high school senior and plans on going to nursing school. My house is remarkably clean and quiet without numerous teenagers coming in and out and I have cut down grocery shopping from 3 times a week to once per week. Talk about quality of life!

Question: Aside from the pink-shaded Tree of Life, is the hospital going to look any different in October? Any decorations?

Answer: Within the cancer center we have balloons, hors d’oeuvres and drinks. Also, you can find our cancer center staff in pink shirts in October.

Question: The Lakeside Seminars were this past week. How did they go?

Answer: The seminars went very well. Attendance on Tuesday (”Current Treatment of Breast Cancer, Day 2″) was excellent. We were often asked after a seminar concluded, “What’s that surgeon’s name? I want to get her name.” After Day 1, about 10 attendees said they’d be there for the full week of classes.

Question: Are there any Breast Cancer Awareness events or things to watch for, apart from the Lakeside Seminars?

Answer: We just got done shooting a video tour of the Center for Cancer Care. The final footage will be online later in the month.

Question: What screening options are available?

Answer: We have Digital Mammography with additional views the same day, if needed. Additionally we have Breast Ultrasound and MRI. Our Medical Imaging team is ACR certified.

Question: Why should women choose Sherman Health for cancer care?

Answer: First, we are an accredited community hospital program and have received commendation from the Commission on Cancer. This means that we have met and exceeded standards set by their organization.

We also have a very compassionate and clinically excellent staff. Our radiation oncologists are from the University of Chicago group. The nursing staff is 100% OCN-certified. We have a research department, we offer clinical trials, and we have excellent medical oncologists that see patients in their offices as well as at the Center.

Question: What support services are offered to patients at Sherman?

Answer: Support services include:

A nurse navigator that facilitates a monthly Breast Cancer Support Group, dieticians, spiritual support, social worker and lymphedema therapist just to name a few.

We have a close partnership with the American Cancer Society that provides monthly Look Good, Feel Better

Our Sunrise Life Center offers first haircut, wig, and wig fitting, caps, scarves, bra fittings and prosthesis. All of this is free for cancer patients within our community.

Road to Recovery is a program sponsored by the ACS. Trained volunteers drive patients to treatment and doctor visits.

Additionally, our resource center is staffed by an American Cancer Society-trained navigator who guides patients to reputable websites. Patients can get info on their treatment and side effect management.

Question: Is there a number I can call if I’m looking for more info on Sherman’s Center for Cancer Care?

Answer: Absolutely! That number is (224) 783-8746.

Question: Are you happy at Sherman?

Answer: I love it here. I started at the end of January as a radiation nurse, became interim manager in May and Director of Cancer Data Management in August.

We strive to give the highest quality of care so that our patients have good outcomes and quality of life. I am privileged to work with a great staff that is dedicated to the patients, the community and to Sherman. In addition to providing great patient care, they volunteer at hospital, ACS and community events. They are a special team.
